A printed cotton bedsheet looks its best when the colours stay bright and the fabric stays soft. The good news is that caring for cotton is easy. Follow these simple steps to keep your Jaipuri and printed double bedsheets looking fresh, wash after wash.
Tip: always check the care label or product page first – it is the best guide for your specific bedsheet.
Before the first wash
- Wash it separately. Printed and dark-coloured cotton can release some extra dye in the first few washes, so keep it away from white clothes.
- Do a quick colour check. Dab a hidden corner with a wet white cloth. If colour transfers, keep washing the sheet on its own for the first few washes.
Machine wash: the right settings
- Use cold or normal tap water – hot water can fade prints faster.
- Choose a gentle or cotton cycle.
- Turn the sheet inside out where possible and do not overload the drum.
- Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach on coloured prints.
Hand wash method
- Fill a bucket with cold water and dissolve a little mild detergent.
- Soak the bedsheet for 10–15 minutes – avoid long overnight soaking for printed fabric.
- Gently squeeze and rinse in clean water until the water runs clear.
- Do not twist hard; press out the water instead.
Drying: shade is your friend
Strong Indian sunlight can fade bright colours over time. Dry your bedsheets in the shade or turn them inside out if you must dry them in the sun, and take them in as soon as they are dry.
Ironing for a crisp finish
- Iron on a medium cotton setting, preferably on the reverse side of the print.
- Ironing while the sheet is very slightly damp makes creases disappear faster.
Storing bedsheets
- Store only when fully dry to avoid a musty smell.
- Keep the bedsheet and its pillow covers together, folded inside one pillow cover, so the set is easy to find.
- Rotate between two or three sets so each one lasts longer.
How often should you change bedsheets?
Many people change bedsheets once a week. In hot and humid months, or if you sweat a lot, you may want to change them more often. Having a few sets on rotation makes this easy – browse our cotton double bed sheets to build your collection.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a new printed bedsheet release colour?
Some extra dye can come out of printed and dark cotton in the first few washes. Washing it separately in cold water helps.
Can I use fabric softener on cotton bedsheets?
A small amount is usually fine, but too much can leave a coating on the fabric. Follow the care label of your bedsheet.
